You'd Better Run

To Art & Sole

When a friend casually mentions that she's training for a marathon, the appropriate response is to look at her with a mixture of admiration and incredulousness. After all, she'll be working out for months on end to complete in an event that was named for Marathon, Greece — the city that Pheidippides ran from, as legend has it, to report battle news to the fine people of Athens 25 miles away; apparently, this messenger dropped dead soon after completing the trek. His message? Greeks: 1, Persians: 0. Classical-humanities scholars say that part of the reason Pheidippides keeled over was because he just didn't have anything interesting to look at during his journey. Fortunately for your friend, the organizers of the Spirit of Saint Louis Marathon are thinking ahead and have planned to line the course with murals by Rich Brooks, James Kirby and other talented artists. You can buy one of these works of art now (and pick it up sometime after the Sunday, April 9, run, of course) by attending the Art & Sole party and art auction, held at the Studios at Sidney Street and Ohio Avenue (2500 Ohio Avenue; 314-727-0800). The party's from 6:30 to 10 p.m., and the bidding starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $30; for more information visit www.stlouismarathon.com.
