You gotta love Ed Asner (if you don't, what's wrong with you? Get some help). Asner — born in Kansas City, Missouri — was already a veteran stage and film actor in 1970 when he landed the television role of a lifetime as Mary Richards' supremely grouchy but decent boss, Lou Grant, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. After seven memorable years with Moore, Asner got his own show (Lou Grant) and scored a hit with that too. Since those two TV series wrapped, Asner has appeared in innumerable movies, TV shows and plays; now he's coming to town to portray none other than Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the one-man play FDR. You'd need some spit, a lot of gravel and more than a soupcon of depth to tackle this role — the distinguished actor under discussion easily meets those criteria and then some. Enjoy Edward Asner in FDR tonight at 8 p.m. at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre (Parker Road and Waterford Drive, Florissant; 314-921-5678 or www.florissantmo.com). Tickets are $25 to $27.
