Wash Your Tank Out with Soap

by

This Saturday, 35 teams ditch the gas tank for the soap box to compete in the Red Bull Soap Box Race in Forest Park. The race is a national competition in which amateur drivers let their imaginations run wild as they fabricate their own vehicles and then put their kooky conveyances to the test, racing downhill Fred Flintstone-style — no engines, no batteries and no electricity. Unlike in typical races, speed is only one of the criteria used when judging the competitors: Big points are also scored for showmanship and creativity. To take a gander at preliminary sketches of participating vehicles, visit the event's Web site, www.redbullsoapboxusa.com. Scheduled to race are "Aesop's Folly," a giant grasshopper straight out of a Bert I. Gordon monster mash; the Superman-influenced "Kryptobox"; and, coming complete with Aunt Edna up top, "The Family Truckster," based on Chevy Chase's ride in the film Vacation. It's far too late for you to enter your own creation (maybe next year), but you can still watch the racers and enjoy the pageantry, for free. The opening ceremony commences on the Muny grounds in Forest Park at 12:30 p.m., and the races begin at 1 p.m. sharp.
