Voices in the Wilderness

It's too bad Alan Bennett isn't a beloved household name here, as he in his native UK. Truthfully, it's hard to imagine his brand of gentle humor and quiet, unforced drama ever appealing to a broad American audience; yet he has his admirers stateside -- a loyal bunch we are, too. The Yorkshire writer, comic and playwright traffics in wry subtleties and extends an unfailing, humane compassion toward his characters, no matter how unlikable or self-deluded they appear to be. You can get a glimpse of the winning Bennett formula first-hand when St. Louis Actors' Studio presents Talking Heads. The play takes the monologue form, ideal for truly getting inside a character's head and allowing him or her to self-reveal simply through the process of talking. Performances take place at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (May 17 through 26) at the Gaslight Theater (358 North Boyle Avenue; 314-458-2978 or www.stlas.org). Tickets are $25 to $30. Matinee tickets are $75, which includes a high tea and supper with the cast and crew immediately following the show.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: May 17. Continues through May 26, 2013
