Uniquely Jewish

The fifteenth annual St. Louis Jewish Film Festival continues to find films that explore Judaism from interesting and unexpected angles. The double feature of The Name My Mother Gave Me and The Fire Within leaves no doubt that Jewishness is not skin deep. The former is a documentary about a group of Israeli teenagers who return to their Ethiopian homeland for a year and discover that personal identity can be a tough concept to pigeonhole. The Fire Within is also a documentary, but about the Jewish village of Iquitos in the Peruvian rainforest. Moroccan Jews came to Peru during the late nineteenth century, married indigenous women, and maintained their Jewish traditions alongside the Amazonian way of life, resulting in a unique type of Judaism. The documentary twofer begins at 2 p.m. at Plaza Frontenac Cinema (1701 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Frontenac; 314-442-3179 or Tickets are $11 to $12.
