Toop Suit Riot

Penelope Toop is the wife of Lionel, the village vicar, and also a former actress. Her lack of traditional "vicar's wife" qualities makes her a frequent subject of gossip for Miss Skillon, the town's self-appointed big mouth. Is there any way to quiet Miss Skillon's stinging tongue? Actually, there is. Clive Winton, Penelope's old acting chum, makes a quick visit to the village to catch a production of Private Lives with his pal. In order to dodge Army regulations, Clive dons Reverend Toop's spare suit and collar on their trip to the theater. Once back home, Penelope and Clive reenact the fight scene from the play, which Miss Skillon stumbles into and assumes is a knock-down, drag-out fight between the vicar and his wife -- of course, she gets a little too close to the action and is inadvertently knocked out. The unexpected arrival of the Bishop (Penelope's uncle), another vicarand a spy on the run from the authorities results in four men dressed as Church of England clerics, one loopy woman and whole lot of explaining to do. Philip King's farce See How They Run is performed by the Theatre Guild of Webster Groves at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday (January 6 through 15) at the Theatre Guild of Webster Groves (517 Theater Lane; 314-962-0876 or www.theatreguildwg.org). Tickets are $12 to $15.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 6. Continues through Jan. 15, 2012
