[title of piece]

Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell are feverishly trying to develop a musical from scratch so that they can enter the finished project in a festival. The deadline for entry is three weeks, and the two can't even agree on what the musical should be about. Then it hits them: Make the musical about making the musical. In dream sequences and workshops, they test new ideas and abandon old ones, eventually developing a finished play that charts the birth pangs of the play they just finished. [title of show] wades blissfully into the waters of self-reference and metastructure, as two young men create a musical that's about creating the musical they're performing onstage. The songs are about the craft of writing a musical, but they're also about the difficulties of any project; self-doubt, time constraints, lack of inspiration, personal feelings about co-workers and the terror of revealing anything personal to a stranger are encoded in the DNA of any finished work. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis presents [title of show] at 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, in the Emerson Studio Theatre at the Loretto-Hilton Center (130 Edgar Road; 314-968-4925 or www.repstl.org). The show continues every day except Monday through Sunday, January 31. Tickets are $42.50 to $54.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 13. Continues through Feb. 7, 2010
