Tight Makes Right

For the first time in its admittedly brief history, the Mr. Midwest Leather Contest is being held in the same city for a second consecutive year. That’s right, St. Louis; you’re hosting Mr. Midwest Leather Contest 2008. Actually, JJ’s Clubhouse (3858 Market Street) is serving as home base for the whole magilla, but St. Louis can be collectively proud of the achievement. The three-day celebration of the leather lifestyle starts with an 11 p.m.-to-1 a.m. meet and greet with the contestants at JJ’s on Friday, April 4. The actual contest begins at 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, still at JJ’s ($10 cover at the door), where competitors from thirteen states will be judged in formal attire and minimal wear categories, with the presentation of a speech and extemporaneous question-answering being factored in as well. The attitude and image projected while in leather are also important, so men, be bold. Although, when you’re dressed head-to-toe in black leather, it’s purt-near impossible to feel anything but bold. Sunday, April 6, is reserved for the Victory Ball, which begins at 5 p.m. The winner moves on to Chicago to compete for the Mr. International Leather title; The leathermen who don’t take the title still get to be leathermen, so life ain’t all bad.
