Millennium Falcon or Enterprise? Blasters or Phasers? Ewoks or Tribbles? Long has sci-fi fandom fought the Great Debate-- not the played-out Harlow Shapley/Heber Curtis dispute over the size of the universe, but a no-holds barred discourse over which sci-fi franchise reigns supreme, Star Wars or Star Trek? It remains to be seen if J.J. Abrams, director of the blockbuster Star Trek reboot films and the man pegged to helm 2015's Star Was Episode VII, will be able to unite these warring factions and reconcile Yoda's spiritual "Force" with Spock's incontrovertible "Logic." But at 8 p.m. tonight the Webster University Forensics and Debate Team argues The Great Debate: Star Trek vs. Star Wars at the St. Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4400 or www.slsc.org). Additionally, the Federation will take on the Empire in a costume contest showdown, and an interstellar line-up of activities are planned for the evening, including a chance to play out-of-this-world instruments designed by circuit bender Dustin Nosreppe. And at 10 p.m. the winning debate team unveils its choice of film to screen at the OMNIMAX Theater. Admission is free.
