Third Degree, Squared

It is hard to believe that Third Degree Glass Factory has been around for only nine years. Tonight, they celebrate their almost-decade in a big way. At 6 p.m., the glassblowing demos begin, as do the hands-on activities if you want to make a paperweight or Halloween-themed items (a $20 fee for each). My Chef Heidi serves up inexpensive tapas if you care for a nosh between demos or while browsing the Great Glass Pumpkin Harvest, a lovely selection of pumpkins made by in-house artists. The Pumpkin Death Match starts at 7:15 p.m., as teams compete to make glass pumpkins that live or die as determined by the audience. (The method of execution? Dropped in a water tank while still hot.) More entertainment is provided by Salt Of The Earth, a bluesy folk band, that plays at 8 p.m. with a little help from the Fire Tech Performers, who dance, juggle and breathe as much fire as you wish. Third Degree Glass Factory is located at 5200 Delmar Boulevard and can be reached by phone at 314-367-4527 or through their website at www.thirddegreeglassfactory.com. Admission is free.
