They’ve Got Spirit

Who says that prosperous St. Louisans leave our fair city and never return? Raymond A. Thomas (pictured), creative art director for Ebony magazine and successful filmmaker, is coming back to St. Louis — if only for a short time — with his art in tow. His show at the Portfolio Gallery & Educational Center (3514 Delmar Boulevard; 314-533-3323), What the Spirit Says, also features works by Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Thomas’ pieces evoke a certain spirituality through the brightly colored canvases, and Musawwir too appreciates the life color can bring to his paintings, which focus on his Muslim faith and the lives and struggles of African Americans. The opening reception for What the Spirit Says runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, but make sure you’re there for the artist talk at 7:15 p.m. The exhibit remains up through Sunday, May 6, and the gallery is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays. Starts: March 26. Continues through May 6
