They Put a Spell On You

The spelling bee, long a source of drama and nausea for children, has finally broken out of the school gymnasium and onto the stage of the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or www.fabulousfox.com) with the musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Nine children, representing a range of financial backgrounds and parenting strategies, compete to see who can win the big bee. Will it be the overextended superkid (Marcy Park), the boy recently struck by the “miracle” of puberty (Chip Tolentino) or the spelling whiz who’s dead-set on making up for last year’s loss (William Barfee)? Maybe it’ll be one of the audience volunteers, who take their best shot at out-spelling the kids. Spelling Bee opens at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, and continues through Sunday, May 20 (check the Web site for show times). Tickets are $15 to $53.
