The Right Now evolved out of Eli Jones, a young Chicago R&B band that flirted with the jam and went all the way with the funk, riding a round-trip groove train from grimy downtown soul to well-buffed uptown blues. Led by the brassy wail of Stefanie Berecz and a horn section that knows its Muscle Shoals charts, the band catches up with the soul revival on the 2010 long-player Carry Me Home, which unfolds like a sonic map of classic and current soul music — from the glide-and-grind of Booker T. & the M.G.'s to Sly Stone's fuzz-funk to Nikka Costa's sassy, swampy pop. Ultimately, the Right Now earns its name with a clutch of crafty originals and inspired, big-band live dynamics.
