The creator of more than 400 works and the founder of the New York City Ballet, George Balanchine remains a monolith in the world of American ballet. The Saint Louis Ballet pays tribute to the great man with a performance of Serenade, one of his signature pieces. Created in 1934, shortly after Balanchine immigrated to New York, Serenade was the first ballet he choreographed in America, and it helped set the course for ballet here. This work makes its St. Louis debut this weekend alongside Brahms Quintet by Dennis Nahat, the artistic and executive director of Ballet San Jose, and Saint Louis Ballet artistic director Gen Horiuchi's new piece. The company's performances take place at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (March 9 and 10) at Washington University's Edison Theatre (6445 Forsyth Boulevard; 314-935-6543 or www.edisontheatre.wustl.edu). Tickets are $35 for adults and $25 for children, seniors and students.
