The High Cost of Renting

Sloane is an attractive young man with an air of danger to him. It's no wonder the middle-aged Kath is so eager to have Sloane as a lodger, a position he accepts. Their co-habitation is not without problems. Kath's father, Kemp, still lives with her, and Kemp believes Sloane is the man who killed his boss. Kath also worries that her brother, Ed, won't be pleased with Sloane living in the family home. Surprisingly, Ed is so comfortable with the idea that he hires Sloane to be his chauffeur. But what about Kath's plans for Sloane? Joe Orton's black comedy Entertaining Mr. Sloane is a hornet's nest of repression, lechery and manipulation, with a dark sting at the end. HotCity Theatre presents this nasty tale at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday (September 6 through 21) at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-289-4063 or www.hotcitytheatre.org).
