The Greening of Downtown

The beads have barely settled from Mardi Gras, and already it’s time for St. Patrick’s Day. These are a busy few weeks for revelers, aren't they? Today at noon, the 42nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off from the intersection of Eighteenth and Market streets, sending about 120 units of marching bands, community groups, floats, inflatables, more than 5,000 marchers and a whole lot of green cascading through downtown. The exceptionally hearty -- and party-hearty -- will be up much earlier than that, to cheer on the participants of the St. Patrick’s Day Run, which starts at 9 a.m. near Broadway and Spruce Street. The party doesn’t stop when the parade ends, however, because the Irish Village at Kiener Plaza (Seventh and Market streets) is open before, during and after the run and parade. Here you’ll find vendors selling Irish-themed merchandise, food, and perhaps some beer, as well as live entertainment throughout the day. Admission to the parade and the Irish Village are free, but you’ll want to bring you wallet if you’re interested in eating and drinking. For more information, visit
