The Genuine George

All Americans are familiar with the mythic George Washington: honest lumberjack of cherry trees, possessor of a wooden smile, savior of our nation. But Washington wasn't just a myth — he was a real man who had lived a full life before he stepped up as our nation's baby daddy. Who was that guy? Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon can teach you. This new exhibit at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or from Friday, October 19 through Sunday, January 27, 2013, features 100 objects from Washington's life (including his only surviving set of dentures, which are not made of wood) and detailed models as well as interactive displays that shove aside fable and folklore in favor of fact and insight. Of particular interest are three life-size models of Washington that were constructed using modern forensic techniques; these figures are as close as you'll ever get to standing in front of the real George Washington. The museum is open daily and admission is $4 to $10, but free to St. Louis City and County residents from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
