In the 1991 rock & roll film The Commitments, Frames vocalist/guitarist Glen Hansard plays Outspan Foster, the sincere young guitarist of a fictional band that'll never make waves in Dublin. Hansard's off-celluloid band has found success in Ireland with tattered, working-class anthems driven by violin and staccato guitar -- although American audiences have been more elusive, partly because the Frames are just too old for the "young adult" demographic. The intermittent digi-gurgle and symphonic synths of their second Anti- release, Burn the Maps, can't change who The Frames are: alt-rock blokes with earnest arena dreams. But at the Austin City Limits Festival two weeks ago, these dreams were realized in a collective spasm of fanatic power chords and electric violin lines that fluttered like football flags over 20,000 dehydrated revelers -- all of whom, finally, seemed to get it.
