The Doctor Is In

Neil Simon is an national treasure, as is Anton Chekhov within his native Russian literary tradition. The two writers -- the former a comic genius, the latter a more sober dramatist and titan of the short-story form -- are hardly kindred spirits on the surface of things, but oftentimes delving beneath superficialities and flimsy categories yields unexpected delights. Such is the case with Neil Simon's The Good Doctor. He wrote the play in the early '70s as both a homage to and a reimagining of the great Russian master Chekhov's tales, and audiences and critics responded well; the production earned a Tony Award. Enjoy the New Jewish Theatre's take on The Good Doctor at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday (October 3 through 19) in the Wool Studio Theatre at the Jewish Community Center (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; 314-442-3283 or www.newjewishtheatre.org). There is one 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, October 20, and tickets are $35 to $39.
