The Dark Continent Enlightens

When it comes to portraying Africa, Hollywood's approach has changed little since Johnny Weissmuller swung across the silver screen as Tarzan. This weekend's African Film Festival at Washington University is out to shed some light on the West's tired concept of "Darkest Africa" with a series of feature-length and short films that shatter age-old stereotypes. The festival opens Friday at 7 p.m. and is highlighted by Une femme pas comme les autres (An Uncommon Woman), in which a highly successful businesswoman socks it to polygamists by taking on a second husband. Saturday's 1 p.m youth matinee kicks off with Bino and Fino, Nigeria's charming animated series that eschews safaris and singing lions to focus on a brother and sister living a modern urban life with their grandparents. All films screen in Washington University’s Brown Hall (1 Brookings Drive), and admission is free. For a complete listing of films and showtimes, call 314-935-7879 or visit
