That’s Amore

Feel the love for some Italian films

by

My, St. Louis has had an embarrassment of international-film-festival riches lately! First, there was the short-and-sweet African Film Festival a few weekends back, and now, you can catch movies from two European countries — Germany and Italy — in two separate screening spectacles! For information on the German fest, check this out. But to learn more about the 2007 Italian Film Festival of St. Louis, keep your eyes right here. This weekend marks the final two days in this event’s three-weekend run. Screening Friday, April 13, is Alla luce del sole (Come into the Light), which is based on the true story of a Sicilian priest who provided aid to the poor and ended up at odds with the local mafia “family.” Was this man of the cloth able to continue his divine mission? And in matters of the other kind of family, La terra (Our Land) — the final film in the fest, which is shown on Saturday, April 14 — concerns four adult brothers who haven’t spoken to one another in many years. They convene at the family farm to decide whether or not to sell it and their heritage. Both films screen in Italian with English subtitles at 8 p.m. in Brown Hall on the campus of Washington University (Forsyth and Skinker boulevards). Admission is free; learn more by calling 314-422-3102 or visiting www.italianfilmfestivalstlouis.com.
