Tera Melos

8 p.m. Thursday, May 14. The Firebird, 2706 Olive Street.

The spastic, start/stop dynamics incorporated by Roseville, California's Tera Melos are nothing new in the world of experimental music or math rock. But it's the spaces between these machine-gun-speed note bursts that make its music have such an impact. On songs like "40 Rods to the Hogs Head" and "Last Smile for Jaron," unexpected genre-morphing – everything from ambient, keyboard-driven electro to tightly produced pop – mingles with roomy sections of echo-laden guitar. It's these breaks in the action that make the chaos so much of a sucker punch each time it comes back around.
