Team Sleep

Sunday, July 17; Pop's (1403 Mississippi Avenue, Sauget, Illinois)

Even if you don't like the Deftones, you might consider checking out Chino Moreno's other band, Team Sleep. With it, he and high school friend Todd Wilkinson leave behind chugga-chugga heaviness in favor of explorative and trance-y pop delights. Although the group's self-titled debut is little more than above average, there are some great moments and evocative moods -- picture early Catherine Wheel toying with trip-hop -- that ultimately make it worth checking out. It remains to be seen how well Moreno and crew will be able to translate this very studio-based album into a live setting, but the odds are good -- considering that he has people like the unstoppable Zach Hill (of Hella fame) backing him up on drums.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $13 to $15; call 618-274-6720 for more information.
