Target Market / Ad Astra Per Aspera

9 pm. Thursday, January 18. Ground Floor (215 East Main Street, Belleville, Illinois).

The members of Target Market thank So Many Dynamos in the liner notes of their full-length debut, No Thrills — a nice move, since they're turning just as many heads nationwide as the Dynamos did last year. Influential tastemaking blogs such as and music.for-robots .com praised their tunes in recent weeks. But while the local quintet's spring-loaded, danceable rhythms and howling vocals do resemble the Dynamos, the songs on Thrills possess a harder edge. Think the corrugated riffs promulgated by J. Robbins in his various bands, or the atmospheric, experimental angles found on ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead's recent albums. The Lawrence, Kansas, quintet Ad Astra Per Aspera — who draw frequent comparisons to the Pixies — will also perform.
