Take Your Best Shot

To some people — present company included — bartenders are almost like heroes. More than just drink-pourers and -mixers, the good ones provide company for companionless patrons and lend a bar a welcoming vibe. Plus, bartenders and other service-industry folks wait on the soused and the hungry, tough groups indeed, and our local folks also raise money for various organizations, including Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, through the Bartenders' Charity Ball. Held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch (315 Chestnut Street), this party offers music from Nonstop Reggae and the famous DJ Gary Mac, as well as performances from Lola Van Ella and friends. Tickets to the ball cost $75 in advance ($80 at the door), and you can make a purchase at www.bartenderscharityball.com or at any of the establishments listed there. And note: Dress for this event is classy — the website even has information about tuxedo rentals.
