Take It To the Bridge

Constructed in 1929 at double its original estimated cost, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, with its distinctive 30-degree turn midway across the mile-long span, was considered a masterpiece of engineering and aesthetic design. During the 1930s Route 66 was rerouted over the bridge, boosting the latter's profile in the national consciousness. From the late '60s on, though, the beautiful structure fell into disuse. But the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge is back in action nowadays -- not as a carrier of motor traffic, but of bicycles and running and walking shoes. You can celebrate the 84th birthday of this homegrown treasure today from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The Bridge Birthday Bash & Bicycle Ride takes place on the bridge (10950 Riverview Drive) with beer, live music, ice cream and cake (while they last), and also features bike routes on both sides of the river for everyone from novice to veteran. Fees are $3 to $15 per person. Go to for more information.
