While Marvel’s big-budget Avengers movie proved powerful enough to please both critics and comic-book fans alike, there's no denying a lot gets lost in translation when adapting comics to film. By far, the most faithful modifications of Marvel’s mightiest came in the '60s from Grantray-Lawrence Animation. The cartoons were overseen by Stan Lee and ripped straight from the source material; the segments were created by simply photocopying pages drawn by the likes of Jack Kirby and animating the lips. Super 8 Movie Madness returns to the Way Out Club (2525 South Jefferson Avenue; 314-664-7638) this Tuesday at 8 p.m. with an Avengers Triple Feature
of these classic Hulk, Iron Man and Thor cartoons, plus a fistful of fantastic Super 8 snippets including a James Bond trailer reel. Admission is just $3, but keep the kids at home -- you must be 21 or older to attend.
