Strings Attached

We're fascinated with opposites — how love can turn into hate so quickly, how daylight and nighttime exist just minutes apart, how a string concert can be lovely yet funny at the same time. Now, regarding that last one: Sure, we like the sounds emitted from a violin, the warmth of the cello's tones, the soothing music that comes from instruments made of wood and strings — but that doesn't mean we think a string concert is a raucous good time. At least, we didn't think that was the case, but that was before we checked out Pluck, a classically trained trio of string musicians. During the group's Musical Arson! concert, the artists play songs ranging from those by the old composers to tunes by modern-day songwriters, such as the Beatles, but they don't just play the music and then call it a night. The performers bicker, dance, compete with one another and generally entertain you while presenting a lovely concert, at the end of which they light something on fire. And you know you want to see what gets torched! The group performs in St. Louis at 8 p.m. Friday, November 19, at the Edison Theatre on Washington University's campus (6445 Forsyth Boulevard); there's also a children's show at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 20. Tickets cost $20 to $35 for the Friday-night show and $12 for the kiddo-focused performance; call 314-534-1111 or visit to make a purchase.
