Storytelling in Stills

Photography is often misunderstood as an exceedingly trustworthy medium. Whereas paintings and sculptures are seen as the artist's subjective interpretations, a photograph is typically treated as a direct facsimile of the subject, even now, in the era of easily-pirated Photoshop. Still, photographs can tell a story and create a mood -- whether organically or meticulously planned -- just as a motion picture would, working within the same genres: drama, documentary, thriller. The twelve pieces in The First Act: Staged Photography Before 1980, the new exhibit in gallery 321 at the Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park, represent the vast manipulation possibilities and histrionic potential of the medium. The exhibition opens Friday, January 20, and remains on display through Sunday, April 29. The museum is closed on Monday, and admission is free.
