Stay Clean

by

If anybody knows the power of a well-placed naughty word, it's Dick Gregory. This is a guy who titled his 1964 autobiography Nigger. But the pioneering comic, activist, and St. Louis native probably won't be working too blue when he and director Will Gorham discuss Gorham's documentary Clean Mic: Laughing Until It Hurts at the Missouri History Museum's Lee Auditorium (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org). What does it mean for black comedians to perform "clean" comedy to white audiences expecting a certain stereotype? How do comedians of other ethnicities navigate tricky ethnic issues? These and other questions will be addressed in an entertaining way this evening starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free — and there's no two-drink minimum.
