8 p.m. Friday, August 4. Creepy Crawl (3524 Washington Boulevard).

According to Greek mythology, descendants of Hercules founded the city of Sparta. Sparta the band, however, is the offspring of post-hardcore gods At the Drive-In — and since their 2001 conception, the group has amped the angst higher than Mount Olympus (witness the shout-along new single, "Taking Back Control"). But now that original guitarist Paul Hinojos is with rival ATDI offshoot the Mars Volta — he's been replaced by ex-Denali/Engine Down member Keeley Davis — will Sparta's upcoming third album add lyrical fuel to this musical throwdown? Time will tell, but at least fans won't have to wait ten years for the outcome: The visceral yet melodic Threes is due in October.
