Southern Belles

And the fellas who dress like them

When you think of the epic story cycles of the South, the flinty drunkenness of Faulkner probably staggers to mind first. Del Shores is also a writer of epic story cycles of the South, but where Faulkner pumped bourbon-fueled destiny into his stories of the woods and the land, Shores goes with cocktails, trailer parks and the hole-in-the-wall bar where everybody knows your name — and your price. In Sordid Lives, a funeral for a white-trash matriarch is disrupted by various sibling squabbles, a young man's coming out to his gathered family and a delusional drag queen who dresses as country music's leading ladies. Southern Baptist Sissies, the latest installment in Shores' cycle, is a bar-based dark comedy where three young men raised in the Southern Baptist church navigate their homosexuality with varying degrees of success. Both shows come to the Roberts Orpheum Theater (416 North Ninth Street; or 314-588-0388) as part of a fundraising tour for a big-screen adaptation of Sissies. Leslie Jordan (Karen Walker's petite foil, "Beverly Leslie," from Will & Grace) brings his sweet-and-salty flair to both shows in starring turns, and Sissies features the lovely Delta Burke as well. Southern Baptist Sissies plays at 8 p.m. Friday, October 27; Sordid Lives plays at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 29. Tickets are $24.50 to $100 for each show.
Fri., Oct. 27; Sun., Oct. 29
