Soprano on A Streetcar

Tennessee Williams' tragic Southern belle Blanche DuBois is a woman from another age, one who values the old courtesies and presents a facade of genteel wealth and culture. She was clearly destined to be an opera diva, a wrong that was righted by Andre Previn in his operatic adaptation of Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. Now Blanche sings her despondency and descent into madness, as she falls prey to the petty viciousness of her brother-in-law Stanley and finds a sense of peace in the kindness of strangers. Union Avenue Opera presents A Streetcar Named Desire at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (August 1 through 9) at Union Avenue Christian Church (733 North Union Boulevard; 314-361-2881 or Tickets are $32 to $52.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Aug. 1. Continues through Aug. 9, 2014
