See What's Developed

In this insta-crazy world, you'd think Polaroid instant film and cameras would be more popular. But, alas, you can't hook up these devices to the Intertubes, and that's where all the action is. At least some folks still appreciate Polaroid's very cool, if somewhat flawed, technology, and a handful of them are the eleven artists exhibiting in the Polaroid: Past & Present show at the Gretchen Brigham Gallery (733 Union Boulevard). The Arts Group of Union Avenue presents this exhibition, which features various techniques with Polaroid films including image transfers, emulsion lifts and more — that's right, the film can be used in other ways besides the documentation of your mom's 1970s hairstyle. In Barbara Zucker's Lotus Pods (pictured), a piece demonstrating the emulsion lift technique, you won't even recognize the film for all of the sharp contrast. The show is on display from Sunday, July 5, through Sunday, August 2, and there's an opening reception from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 12.
