Saving Throw vs. Love: Failed

Dungeons & Dragons has been around for 40 years at this point, and for non-aficionados the game is mostly synonymous with socially awkward nerds and their strange dice. But for players, D&D is both an escape and a social pursuit; after all, you need a group of people to play. And if a Dungeon Master is going to have real-world problems, they're mostly likely to stem from the group and its internecine relations. Chris is the DM whose plight proves the old adage, "never split the party." When Carol joins the game, sparks fly & but not between him and her. Instead, Carol is interested in Chris' friend, Steve, and he's responsive to her charms. How does the lonely, bulky, unemployed guy who's used to laying down the law (at least in the game world) deal with this betrayal? Poorly. Very poorly. Chris Bruemmer's A Dungeon Master's Guide to Life screens at 9:30 p.m. at the Landmark Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City; as part of the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. Tickets are $10 to $12.
