Larry and Brenda Thompson have amassed an impressive art collection with a focus on works created by African Americans. The Thompsons have purchased pieces by acknowledged masters such as Romare Bearden, Vertis Hayes and Thelma Johnson Streat, but they've also sought out works by regional and emerging artists. In doing so, the Thompsons have helped build a stronger understanding of the African American experience, while also preserving a cultural legacy. Tradition Redefined: The Larry and Brenda Thompson Collection of African American Art, the new exhibition at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art (3663 Lindell Boulevard; 314-977-2666 or sluma.slu.edu), features more than 60 paintings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces. The show opens with a free public reception at 5 p.m. Friday, February 21. Tradition Redefined remains up through Sunday, May 18, and the gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday.
