Royal Purple

Celie's song of hope

Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple is the point of origin for the chick-lit movement. Main character Celie endures horrible abuse at the hands of her father and her cold-hearted husband, Mister; she has children taken away from her; then she finds love with Shug, Mister's mistress, and discovers she has a flair for making pants. And despite all the suffering, she realizes she can also love herself. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and an inspiration to Oprah, The Color Purple has been transformed into a successful musical that garnered eleven Tony nominations. The touring version of the Broadway hit comes to the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or for a limited engagement. Performances are 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday (October 21 through November 2) with an occasional matinee thrown in for good measure. Tickets are $27 to $62.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 21. Continues through Nov. 2, 2008
