Royal Purple

Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple had all the makings of a compelling musical: There's the sexism, the racism, the beating of women, abduction of children, sexual abuse and a couple other scandalous moments. With these obstacles to overcome, you have a dramatic arc in place and subject matter that diverges from the stereotypical love songs and power ballads. And yet The Color Purple bills itself as the "musical about love," because the main character, Celie, despite enduring all of the aforementioned travails, finally does learn to love. Her love includes her tormentors, her God, herself and all the other beautiful things in the world — that's quite a triumph. The touring production of The Color Purple returns to town Tuesday through Sunday (February 2 through 7) at the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or www.fabulousfox.com). Tickets are $27 to $68.
