Rome Sweet Rome

William Wyler's 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday is Cinderella in reverse. The role of Princess Ann, who escapes from her royal handlers to experience the simple joys of real life and inadvertently falls in love with American newspaperman Gregory Peck, was originally written for Elizabeth Taylor. But newcomer Audrey Hepburn, who had only a handful of appearances in minor British films to her credit, landed the role after a single screen test and would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. Roman Holiday was filmed entirely on location in Italy, but the impressive scenery never overpowers the pitch-perfect chemistry of the two leads. Come watch the sparks fly tonight at 9 p.m. when Roman Holiday screens at Forest Park's Art Hill (314-721-0072 or as part of the Saint Louis Art Museum's "Summer Of Love" outdoor film series. Pre-show festivities include music from La'Tinos Latin Tropical Band, and begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
