Rollin' On the River

Rumor has it that the first St. Louisans settled here because of the region's intersecting rivers, yet you pay those waterways absolutely no mind. What kind of St. Louisan are you, anyway? To give our rivers their due, head out to Frontier Park (South Main Street and First Capitol Drive, St. Charles) on Saturday, August 23, for the Race for the Rivers Festival, organized by the Greenway Network. At this party on the Missouri's riverfront, held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., dine on barbecue and all kinds of other eats, participate in activities for the young and less young, and listen to seven bands play. You're sure to stir up some of your own watery pride, and you're bound to learn something about the importance of clean streams and river restoration. This outdoor extravaganza is just one element of a whole weekend of waterworks that also features two river races (one 65-mile paddle for the more skilled competitor and a shorter, more leisurely float, the latter of which ends up at the festival). You'll find details about the fest and the races at; you can also call 636-498-0772 for more information.
