Robots Are Everywhere

Unlike the terrorizing robots seen in that Old Glory Insurance commercial, most metal ones are charming and make for nice traveling companions. Just ask Jeffrey Sass. He journeyed around town for a year with a (toy) robot and took photographs of their adventures with a variety of cameras (toy, pinhole, 35-millimeter, etc.). Wanting to spread the message that robots are good -- as are the remaining unique parts of our created landscape, like the Vess soda bottle sign and the Eat-Rite diner -- Sass painted over his robot images with rich, lush colors and put these pieces on display for all to see. Check out My Robot’s Vacation at Subterranean Books (6275 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-862-6100 or daily through Sunday, May 13. The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.
