Renew, Regenerate, Revitalize

by

For those who were worried that the opportunity had vanished to see the superb Dance Theatre of Harlem perform live after the professional ballet company went on hiatus in 2004, fret no more: Not only has the company relaunched, but thanks to Dance St. Louis, it is spending a weekend at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road). Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook (the former, who was once a principal with the New York City Ballet, was the first African American male to join a major ballet company, and the latter was his teacher), and now led by former company principal Virginia Johnson, DTH stays true to its origins, remaining committed to diversity and high-quality dance. Expect to see commanding ballet pieces, including a new work by Darrell Grand Moultrie, Ulysses Dove's Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven (Odes to Love and Loss) from 1993, and even tributes to George Balanchine. Dance Theatre of Harlem takes the stage at 8 p.m. Friday, and at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday (November 7 and 8), and tickets, which cost $38 to $65, are available at 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org.
Fri., Nov. 7, 8 p.m.; Sat., Nov. 8, 2 & 8 p.m., 2014
