Remembering Paris in Song

There's a little place on the Rue Lepic in Paris. A young GI, part of the American forces fighting in World War II, found his own slice of heaven in that bar with a young French woman. They laughed and loved and forgot about tomorrow against a backdrop of songs that encouraged such behavior. And then the war ended and that soldier returned to America. Now, with the memories of those songs -- and of her, the woman who might have been the one -- still haunting him, he returns to Paris to visit the old place one more time. And in his memories, all of those songs rings as loudly as ever. Ken Page conceived of Cafe Chanson, a theatrical cabaret performance, as "a ballet in song." Upstream Theater presents Cafe Chanson at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (January 11 through 26), with performances at 7 p.m. Sunday (January 13 and 20) and at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 27, all at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; The Saturday, January 12, show is a gala performance; contact Upstream Theater for details and prices.
