Read on, Reader

A day-long celebration of literacy, the Big Read Festival encompasses a plethora of activities for both youthful and experienced readers. More than 40 authors participate in panel discussions, book signings and discussions of their work at free, first-come, first-seated sessions. Janet Fitch (author of the Oprah Book Club-approved White Oleander) discusses her novel Paint It Black; Alan Weisman presents his exploration into the collapse of the human presence, A World Without Us; and Dorothy Hamill, Olympic Gold medalist, discusses her memoir, A Skating Life. Children’s activities include an interactive Kid’s Corner with make-and-take craft projects, a film festival and spelling-bee competitions. Please note, those seventeen and older can participate in the American Dictionary Define-a-Thon. The Big Read takes place outside in Clayton’s business district, on South Central Avenue between Forsyth Boulevard and Carondelet Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more details and information, call 314-863-4485 or visit www.bigread.net.
