It's easy to overlook the artistry and design of a concert poster while scanning it for event information, but take a closer look -- it might just be an original work of art promoting the very same. Examine a wealth of hand-printed, artful gig poster designs when Mad Art Gallery (2727 South Twelfth Street; 314-771-8230 or www.madart.com) hosts the National Poster Retrospecticus from 7 to 11 p.m. Tuesday, April 16. The collection features work from more than 75 poster designers, including Aaron Draplin, Daniel Danger and Aesthetic Apparatus, with art promoting bands such as Modest Mouse, Phish, Wilco and many more. St. Louis' own Firecracker Press will also a feature its house-made show posters, as well as play its printing press like musical instruments in a manual-feed performance. The National Poster Retrospecticus is only touring seven cities across the country and stops in St. Louis for one night only. Admission is free.
