Portugal. The Man.

8:30 p.m. Monday, October 15. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they initially started out in Alaska, or maybe it's because they can actually play their instruments — or maybe it's just that weird period in their name. Whatever your reason, there's something special about Portugal. The Man. The band's latest full-length Church Mouth is a progressive rock odyssey that evokes the Mars Volta as much as it does MC5 and is the most original album to come out of the punk underground in recent memory. "Tell me where we'd rather be," frontman John Gourley sings on the track "Sugar Cinnamon" — and if you're thinking on skipping out on seeing Portugal. The Man live, you should be asking yourself that exact same question.
