Pieta Brown's MySpace page claims her hometown is "the middle of nowhere, Iowa," but the singer-songwriter has a voice and temperament situated somewhere between Nashville and Baton Rouge. Her folksy drawl calls to mind the ragged, sweet soul of Lucinda Williams (which is fitting, because Brown has worked with Lu's guitarist Bo Ramsey), but Brown's delivery also has a hiccupping lilt reminiscent of Martha Wainwright. Her third and most recent album, Remember the Sun, was released in 2007, but Calexico fans may have heard her voice on the Tucson group's latest LP, Carried to Dust. Cassie Morgan, whose Pine So Sweet EP was one of the standout local releases of 2008, will open the show.
