Pass Through the Gates

In nationally released movies, the student thread runs from Good Will Hunting through Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite. All have that “film student” vibe and appeal to the same sorts of folks. In order to see work that really walks the edge, you're better off on the festival circuit. Indeed, a most excellent one has arrived! The FilmGate International Student Film Festival runs Friday through Sunday (August 17 through 19) as part of Webster University's Film Series, and features experimental cinema created by film students from Israel, China, Ghana and parts beyond. From the documentary to the animated and the heartfelt to the silly, these short films explore the outer limits of storytelling. Admission is $2.50 for Webster Film Series members and $4 for the regular folks. Screenings are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or and each session features a different program. Discounted 2- and 3-day passes are available, for those of you who are still on a student budget.
