Our Trip to Grief

by

comment
Grief is a foreign country that we all visit. Elements of this other land are familiar, but different in a peculiar way. The food tastes duller there, the landscape is hollow and empty and even the sky is the wrong color in grief. Barb Flunker made a trip there, and returned with a series of abstract paintings that render the scenery in swathes of thick, grisly color. Flunker's friend and fellow artist Dickson Beall then reinterpreted Flunker's paintings as a journey going the other direction toward acceptance and renewal. Their collaborative art exhibition, Hybrid Terrain, is visual documentation of that other realm we visit, and our eventual return to this far brighter world. Hybrid Terrain opens with a free public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 13, at the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City; 314-725-6555 or www.cocastl.org). The show remains up through Sunday, November 17, and the gallery is open daily.
