On Fire, With the Lord

In Southern Baptist Sissies, playwright Del Shores (Sordid Lives) returns to his own Southern Baptist upbringing in small-town Texas to examine the conflicting ideas of what the church says about love and what the church says about homosexuality. Four young men who count themselves as members of the fold struggle with the dawning realization that they are each gay. One denies it wholeheartedly, one accepts it and one embraces his sexuality with a verve; the last young man struggles with straddling both worlds and falls into the crevasse between the two. A tart comedy that zings the religiously judgmental and also gently skewers some of the more destructive elements of popular gay culture, Southern Baptist Sissies proves that you have to be pretty tough to be pretty sissy. Citilites Theatre presents Southern Baptist Sissies at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 7 p.m. Sunday (March 10 through 27), at the Gaslight Theatre (358 North Boyle Avenue; 314-773-1879 or Tickets are $17 to $20.
